MM9 Ad

Description

OK. I'm not sure if I should be submitting this, given that it has, you know, official logos on it and such. I would like to get out of the way right now that this ad is in no way meant to infringe on the trademarks of anything. This was merely created for a laugh. If you read all that clearly and still get pissed off, I recommend you simmer down.

Uh...yes. Was inspired to create an ad for MM 9 after browsing around the VG Museum. I gotta say, I miss the days of the mid-90s. Those ads rocked, especially the ones for PC games (specifically '97). Why don't they make 'em the way they used to? Y'know, original artwork and everything? Must be declining appreciation for video game ads. I wanted this one to be authentic, putting more work into it than I probably should have.

Center illustration: That's Megaman, about to be rammed by Wily's R-Type Vehicle of Doom. By the time MM8 released in '97, people knew that he was a cute kid in little blue briefs and not a smirking ex-bouncer gnome in little blue briefs. Still, I don't think the latter kind of images were easy to shake off if you had been gaming long before '97. While he's still fairly "anime-ish", I did bulk him up a tiny bit (noticeable only in the chest area). Also, those panels on his gauntlets and boots are not coloured differently than the rest of the armour in regular MM9. Little things like that. I considered giving him green eyes, since the X and Legends series were out by '97, but left them blue.

That ship reflected on the floor is supposed to be a Wily Machine of some kind (no cockpit), "manned" by Steelman. Yes, Steelman...with a HELMET. [He refuses to wear one normally] Before anime firmly established the "rival" character archetype, it was common to see twisted evil versions of the main hero who always ended up being cooler. I figured that Steel, with a decent enough helmet, could fit that description. Why a helmet? Because Steel doesn't wear one, that's why.

As for the theme? Death from above.

Tagline: I think this fits the entire series, no? "Kiss your ass goodbye" was a phrase I saw a lot as a kid, flipping through Mom's then-not-so-old Computer Games Strategy Plus magazines. It was usually accompanied by a menacing, armed figure, or a "scary" creature or person. Here, it refers to the Wily Machine. Call it cheesy, but I think it's better than MM5's "HELP MEGA MAN TURN PROTO MAN INTO SPARE PARTS." >.> [I also don't like it when the ad encourages you to "help" the main character. You're supposed to BE the main character, dammit! Unless you do exactly that on account of not being the main character...]

Title: Text made in Photoshop, 9 colored from one I drew myself. Used the "Android Nation" font. The two elements look kinda outta place next to one another, but bah--how else would the 9 stick out? :B

Misc: The PlayStation and Capcom logos were pulled from an ad for MMX4 that I had scanned in myself. However, X4 had been rated K-A. Sorry, but MM9 (the titular story and the series itself) is not K-A. Having no other source, I ripped the T rating from an ad for Ehrgeiz. Also from Ehrgeiz was the "guidelines" for the legal info. I stuck my name in there since I created this pic, not because I own MM--which I don't. Just in case, I tossed in that last line, so no n00b or whatever doesn't start a forum war.

About three or so hours of work later (MM and Steel were drawn and colored separately), I added some "special effects" to make the ad look not so...clean. Like it was actually printed at some point. Didn't turn out the way I thought it would, but it's better than just leaving clean. OF NERD IS ME.

Credits: Mayang's Free Texture Library [link] --I used some of their textures for the floor and Steel's ship. The VG Museum, [link] for having the Ehrgeiz ad (among many others that inspired this project). Uh...myself for scanning in the X4 ad? Computer Games Strategy Plus for inspiring the tagline.
