Obscure PC Game or Vaporware?

First Roughnecks, now this.

I am holding, in my hands, Computer Games Strategy Plus Issue 82, September 1997. This is one of the E3 blowout issues. On page 68 there is a screenshot of a game being made by T-HQ; two guys (one humanoid, the other not) are firing plasma rifles at one another on futuristic bikes, against a moonlit, industrial background. (The game uses sprites.) This game is called "Speed Tribes".

On page 70 it is described as such: "A 3D shooter with very impressive visuals. The Tribes of the story are basically fantastical motorcycle gangs--some human (sort of), some hybrid cyborgs, and the rest 'gothic, non-living nightmares' (in a sci-fi setting?). Set yourself up with one of the six tribes and work your way through the six arenas as you see if you've got what it takes to ride an aercycle in combat. -Windows 95"

The problem...I have found absolutely NOTHING on this game. NOTHING. All the search engines bring up is a novel about Japan of the same name. Soo...is it an ultra-obscure PC-game, or vaporware?

I'm going for the ultra-obscure one. Since search results don't turn up anything, it was probably never made in the first place and was probably just a preview. It's not uncommon for game companies to announce something new, only to scrap it due to complications arising (lack of sufficient help, the game got nowhere, etc.)

And given that it's E3 '97, it could very well be vaporware... ;_; Still, the premise does give me an idea.

I agree with Ultra Obscure.

A lot of games that were promised to come out are usually all hyped, and the ideas are scrapped. (Usually following what seems to be better- then a peice of- er- yeah.)

Or I'm just blind.

The info makes it seem U.O. to me...

Le sigh. Another one for the "great mistakes" page. And that screenshot looked so pretty.

I'll have to send it to you directly--I don't have an Image Shack account.

You'll get several pages of links if you search for ""speed tribes" THQ" that suggests that the game was released in 1998, but I haven't found evidence of that. Those pages may be outdated or incorrect or something.

The PlayStation version was canceled for sure, but I haven't found out about the PC version.

I'm guessing that if the PlayStation original(?) was cancelled, the PC port suffered the same fate.
